Tyre Stretch Calculator

Tyre stretch is when you mount a tyre that’s narrower than the wheel’s recommended width range. The sidewall angle outward, the lip pokes past the tread, and the look becomes unmistakably stance. But there’s a hard limit between aesthetic and unsafe — this calculator shows you exactly where your combo lands, with a live SVG cross-section so you can see what’s actually happening at the bead seat.

Tyre Stretch Calculator

Mounting a narrower tyre on a wider wheel stretches the sidewall outward, pushing the lip beyond the tread. Enter your wheel width and tyre size to calculate stretch amount, sidewall angle, and whether your setup crosses into unsafe territory.

Stretch calculations are geometric estimates. Real-world bead retention, tyre stiffness, and mounting safety vary by tyre brand and construction. Never exceed the wheel manufacturer’s approved tyre width range. Have stretched tyres mounted by an experienced tyre shop.

HOW TYRE STRETCH WORKS

Every tyre is designed for a specific rim width range. When you go narrower than that range, the bead hooks onto the rim’s bead seat at a forced angle — the sidewall gets pulled outward, creating the characteristic “stretched” look where the tread appears narrower than the rim.

The stretch amount in millimetres tells you how much narrower your tyre is than the minimum recommended width for your rim. Anything under 20mm is generally safe. Past 35mm, most reputable tyre shops won’t mount the combination, and for good reason — bead retention under lateral load becomes unreliable.

FAQ

Is tyre stretch illegal?

Depends on your country and how much stretch. In most regions there’s no explicit law against it, but police can defect a vehicle if the modification is deemed unsafe. In Germany and some EU countries, any tyre outside its approved wheel width range fails an inspection. In Australia and the UK, aggressive stretch is a common defect reason. Know your local regulations.

What’s the maximum safe stretch?

The fitment community generally treats 20mm as the “safe daily” limit and 35mm as the hard ceiling for any road use. Beyond 35mm, the risk of bead unseating under hard cornering, hard braking, or low tyre pressure becomes a serious concern. For show-only or static display, this is personal risk tolerance territory.

Does stretch affect handling and tyre wear?

Yes. Stretch narrows the contact patch and changes the sidewall stiffness in ways the tyre wasn’t engineered for. Mild stretch (under 15mm) has minimal real-world impact. Moderate stretch changes the tyre’s cornering characteristics and can cause uneven tread wear toward the centre. Aggressive stretch significantly reduces wet-weather grip and stability.

Which tyres stretch better than others?

Tyres with flexible sidewalls and high-quality bead construction handle stretch better. The fitment community commonly uses Federal SS595, Nankang NS-2R, Toyo Proxes T1-R, and similar flexible-sidewall tyres for stretch builds. Stiff performance tyres (Michelin Pilot Sport, Continental SportContact) are harder to mount stretched and more prone to bead issues.

Can I daily drive stretched tyres?

Mild stretch (under 20mm) is daily-driven by thousands of cars without incident. Keep tyre pressure at the higher end of your tyre’s spec, inspect bead seating regularly, and avoid kerb strikes on the inner sidewall. If you run moderate or aggressive stretch, these are better suited to weekend-show or low-speed use only.
